Louie Burke: Han ready for Gomez

Abie Han
Abie Han of El Paso, Texas

 By Louie Burke

Top Rank has matched up Abie Han (16-0) vs. Joe Gomez (18-5-1) at the El Paso Sunbowl, June 16th on the Undercard of Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee!  There’s been a buzz going around for a couple of months, regarding a possible barn burner of a fight between these two fighters,  now it’s a go!… Two respected local fighters, going head to head.

Abie is very excited to be fighting at home and at the Sunbowl of all places AND on the undercard of Chavez/Lee!… what else could a young undefeated fighter ask for at this point of his career.   Gomez is no one to take lightly, he’s a gamer that comes to slug or box, depending on the opponent he faces.   He definitely had an off night against Angulo, but Angulo, is one of the most dangerous fighters in the first few rounds in boxing today and Gomez got caught hard and early, catching Gomez cold.

Abie has been training very diligently for this fight, he’s been one of Austin Trout’s main sparring partners in Austin’s preparation for Delvin Rodrigez and has worked very hard while in camp.  As anyone could imagine, he wants to put on a good performance for the hometown fans.  If Abie performs like he has been in training, then he should give a good account of himself.

This fight should be a very exciting and good fan fight.  Gomez, like Abie brings excitement into the ring every time they fight.   The fireworks will begin early this year!.. Come to El Paso and see the fight live for only $25 dollars, which are the least expensive tickets, or $200 ringside,  if you really want to impress a hot date!

We Hope to see you in El Paso at the Sun Bowl, June 16th!

New Mexico Boxing: Abie Han Update by Louie Burkee

By Louie Burke

Abie Han‘s first bout of the year, will be part of a card that will be televised on Showtime, headlining Diego Magdaleno vs. Miguel Beltran Jr. . While Abie remained undefeated, he suffered a multitude of plaguing injures last year. Finally feeling healthy again, he looks forward to fighting Rahman Yusubov, from Baku, Azerbaijan.

March, 23rd , Top Rank will have Abie Han, 15-0,10 ko’s, head to Tucson, Arizona, to fight a 6 round bout against Yusubov, a fireplug at 5 foot 7 inch. Yusubov brings a record of 8-4, 6 ko’s, into the fight, trying to derail Abie’s undefeated streak and adding a 9th win to his record. Yusubov is as dangerous with his head as he is with his left hook and overhand right.

Rahman (pronounced: Rock-man)Yusubov comes from Azerbaijan, a Country in Asia that was once was a part of the Soviet Union and has recently focused and invested millions of dollars into their Amateur boxing programs. Baku, Azerbaijan has hosted many International boxing events in in the last few years in order to elevate the level of competition for there athletes, resulting in the production of a class of elite boxers and also, creating imported talent such as Yusubov.

Stay tuned and thanks for the support!

Louie Burke: Able Han Update

By Louie Burke

Abie Han’s fight with Eloy Suarez, which was canceled last month due to an oversight by the Texas Boxing Commission is now scheduled for October 29 in Thackerville, Oklahoma at the WinStar Casino. Top Rank is the promoter of the event that will be headlining highly rated Vanes Martirosyan, who’s fighting against Richard Guiterrez.

Abie’s opponent Eloy Suarez, is a tough come at you guy, with a solid chin. In Suarez’s last fight he put world rated Brian Vera to the test, pushing him to the final round before getting stopped. Prior to his fight with Suarez, Vera won a decision over former WBC World Champ, Sergio Mora.

Abie’s glad the fight was kept together and knows that Suarez will be a tough opponent that’s coming to spoil his undefeated record and his quest for a championship belt.

Thank you for the support and encouragement!

Louie Burke: Abie Han Update

By Louie Burke

After a number of opponents pulled out of fighting Abie Han tonight, Eloy Suarez accepted the challenge, but he was told by the Texas Athletic Commission that his boxing license had expired.

Despite trying to convince the commission that he had a current license he was denied the opportunity. After being told he would not fight, he was not heard of from his trainers again. The commission then found out that he was licensed but had filled out the paper work, using his full legal name, throwing off the system that lists the licensees. But Suarez was gone, no where to be found and the Abie Hans fight was canceled.

Hopefully Top Rank will be able to find another spot for him in the near future.

Louie Burke: Abie Han Update

 By Louie Burke

Opponent after opponent had pulled out of fighting Abie Han for next weeks, Top Rank show on Sept 16th . Rugged Eloy Suarez 11-12-1 is the fighter that finally stepped up to the plate and excepted the bout. This happened after his scheduled San Antonio showdown with Hector “Macho” Camacho Jr. was cancelled.

Abie has been training diligently but was starting to wonder if the fight was going to happen, with so many change of opponents. In preparation for this fight he was able to spar with tough, talented fighters outa the Pound-for-Pound Gym in El Paso, Tx., owned by Louis Aguilar. He also got in rounds with WBA Champ Austin Trout and highly regarded amateur Zach Prieto.

Abie says he’s feeling better than his two previous fights in which he was plagued by nagging injuries to his knuckles, ear drum and elbow. He also knows he’s in a rugged fight with Suarez, whose fight with “Macho” jr. was canceled a couple of weeks ago, freeing him up for this fight with Abie. Abie says “He expects a very physical fight from Suarez, who’s fought a ton of top rated talent. Suarez will be a good yardstick to measure where I’m at career wise. I look forward to fighting Eloy Suarez, so I know where I stand with some of the top guys in the division”.

The fight will be an outdoor event at the QuikTrip Baseball Park in Grand Prairiie, Tx. September 16th.

Abie wants to thank everyone for the support they give him and his family and wishes his sister Jennifer, who'll be fighing the day before, the best of luck!

Louie Burke: Han Update

Abie Han
By Louie Burke

Honing in on July 30’s opponent, Justin Williams, in Denver, Abie Han has looked strong in the gym, sparring with WBA World Champ Austin “ No Doubt” Trout, National Golden Gloves Champ Siju Shabazz and top undefeated prospect, 13-0 Cecil McCalla from Baltimore.

“These guys really push me, motivating me to be on top of my game every time I step in the ring with them,” says Han. “The diversity of styles and high skill level of these guys working with me forces me to adapt as quickly as possible and really think on what’s going to work for me offensively as well as defensively.”

The tough sparring and diligent gym work hopes to pay off against Williams, a spoiler with a height and reach advantage who comes to fight, and stays busy throughout the fight (he’s a “right-handed Paul Williams”). Williams is coming off a spectacular 3rd round ko victory over 10-1 Jovan Munoz, derailing this hot prospect from Tecate, Mexico.

Williams has fought tough opponents with much more experience throughout his short career, hoping that a win over Abie will open eyes, creating better opportunities for him in the future. Abie realizes this, which motivates him to continue his hard work, and not allow Williams to add another top prospect badge to his collection of upsets.

Louie Burke: Update on Abie Han

By Louie Burke

During the last 3 weeks, Abie Han has been in preparation for his fight July 30th at Softball Country Arena in Denver, Colorado against 3-3-1 Justin Williams from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Abie who’s been sparring with Austin Trout and Siju Shabazz, isn’t taking Williams lightly. As was Abie’s last opponent, Taronze Washington, Williams record is deceiving mainly, mainly due to him coming off a stunning 3rd round KO win over 10-1 Jovan Munoz. Williams 3 losses are from opponents that have a combined record of 15-1-1, all by decision. Williams wins are over opponents that have a combined record of 18-5-2 and having a draw with a 6-0 Rudolph Gomez Jr. !

Abie is anxious to get back into the Ring, after having a slightly longer time between fights than he’d like due to a cut suffered in his last fight. Abie is wanting to get back on the KO track again on July 30th!

The fight is being promoted by Top Rank Promotions and being televised on FOX Sports Network.

Louie Burke: Updates on Abie Han and Austin Trout

By Louie Burke

Abie Han is hard at work after suffering a perforated ear drum while sparring last month, which pulled him out of a fight scheduled last month in Tijuana, Mex. But Abie’s been training hard and will be fighting on May 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada against Terronze Washington from Dallas TX. The card, promoted by Top Rank will be held at Mandalay Bay and will be televised on ESPN. Abie’s fight is a 6 round undercard fight, which will hopefully make it on the tube.

Austin Trout is back at full speed and is preparing to defend his title at the end of May. We’ll know more next week. Austin has called out the top names, with no serious responses at this time, so he plans on staying busy till the likes of Canelo Alvarez and/or Miguel Cotto give him a crack at ’em, so stay tuned!!!

Update on Rodriguez and Han

By Louie Burke

The press conference was well attended by the public and the press. There was not much smack talking, just the usual "I’ve trained hard and I’m ready to fight" comments. It was a lot tamer than the press conference in Panama. Robert Davis arrived last night, he’s a big man and appears ready to give David all he can handle.

There will be 16 fights, the semi-main, which is David Rodriguez defending his NABA championship against Robert Davis and the main event which is WBA champ, Nehomar Cermeno defending his title against Cristian Mijares. Both of these bouts will be televised on Televisa.

Abie Han arrived about 4:30 this afternoon. His opponent is Alfonzo Gonzalez from Mexico City. Abie is a little over weight but will be ok by 1:00 tomorrow, which is the weigh-in time.

We don’t know much of anything about Gonzalez. His record is less than impressive, but we’re not going to under estimate anybody. We’re hoping for the win and appreciate the activity. Hopefully we finish with a smile and not a frown.

Report on Austin Trout, David Rodriguez and Abie Han

By Louie Burke

Austin’s had a great camp for his upcoming battle against Nielson Julio Tapia. Yesterday was the last day of the hard sparring and he’ll have a few light rounds of sparring today. This’ll be his last real hard day of training. He’s weighed out at 157 ½ after practice. He’s trained hard and only took a couple of days off after his last fight a month ago. He’s looking forward to tapering down training camp and stepping in the ring Sept 5th , where the number 3 WBA ranking will be at stake. Originally we were going to import sparring, but after seeing video on Tapia, we felt Siju’s style of boxing was close enough that we could keep the sparring in house. Besides Siju, Austin was helped this time around by Tim Meek and Abie Han along with Cornelius Shuler.

David Rodriguez been preparing for his fight against veteran Robert Davis, also for the number 3 spot with the WBA. This will be in Monterrey, Mexico on Sept. 12th . The last week of camp Dave looked as good as I’ve ever seen him, we worked out some kinks in his foot positioning, after that he was looking good and cracking hard. This should be a good fight for David and set him up for some name opponents and bigger pay days During camp, Dave probably had the most consistent sparring in his career. The guys that got Dave ready for his bout were "Big Rod" Willis and Arron Lyons. Since I’ll be in Panama on Tuesday, Dave went on to Houston to finish his training there with Bobby Benton. We’ll all hook up in Monterrey the day after Austin’s fight in Panama.

Also fighting in Monterrey on David’s undercard will be Abie Han, who’s looking very good. We had to nurse a bruised bicep in his right arm for a couple of weeks, he still worked with Austin, but minimized the use or his right hand. As of today he said it feels a lot better and can now straighten it out. He will be ready by the 12th !

We plan on leaving Las Cruces at 5 Tuesday morning to the Juarez airport then leaving for Panama at 9am and arriving at 6:30pm.

Sammy was told by the Dr. to take it easy on his shoulder for at least 6 weeks to let the rotor cuff tear to heal, if all heals well he should be back in action in a couple months if not sooner. Also, Ricky Vasquez has been training hard and is looking for a fight.

Thanks for your support and I’ll try and keep you updated while we’re in Panama and Mexico.

Abie Han report: weigh-ins

From Louie Burke

After a Long drawn Out weigh-in, which was scheduled for 2:00 and didn’t take place til about 4:30 the starving, thirsty fighters were finally weighed. Luckily Abie ate a good breakfast and was hydrated, but most of the other fighters appeared to be suffering as they had to wait for the commissioners to shuffle through the mess of paperwork and then wait again for the doctor to show up. When it finally got under way, abraham and Ibahiem were called to the scales.

Abie Han weighed in at 155, a pound under the 156 contracted weight and his opponent Ibahiem King was two pounds under coming in at 154. Both looked lean and are fighting at a lower weight than they fought in the amateur ranks.

During the face off, matchmaker Vince Parra was hollering out "this is the fight of the night" referring to Abie’s and King’s fight. The fight’s scheduled for 6 rounds, a first for Abie and the second go ‘round for King. I have to agree with Vince and foresee a tough battle, but feel good about Abie’s pre fight preparation.

After the weigh-in we found a pasta joint and put down a hefty plate of angel hair with red meat sauce, drank plenty of water and toped it off with a dish of spamoni ice cream. We then went for a walk and had Vince take us to the hotel to rest and watch the NBA play-offs.
Thanks for your support
Louie

Burke’s blog: Han arrives in San Diego

Blog by Louie Burke

Abie Han and I arrived in San Diego yesterday where we were picked up by matchmaker Vince Parra. He took us to the hotel where we changed into our workout gear to finish off our last workout, and to see what Abie’s weight was.

After the workout, Abie was 156, which is the contracted weight. He looked and felt ready for Thursday night’s fight with Ibahiem King, a 6-0 middleweight from West Palm Beach, Florida.

The event is promoted by Rogue Boxing Promotions and will be the first of a series of fights at the San Diego Hardrock Hotel. Tickets sales seem to be doing very well and a few celebrities will be in the audience.

We look forward to fighting King, he’s a crafty south-paw, much like “No Doubt” Austin Trout. We had great lefty sparring in preparation for the fight, working with Austin and Rene Armijo.

After doing our homework, we know that King will be a true test, and someone not to be taken lightly. At 3-0 we would have liked to get someone a little softer, but it’s been impossible to find an opponent for Abie anywhere in the southwest. We’ve reached out to big promoters with no avail. So, in order to keep active, we decided to jump up a few levels, feeling confident we’ll land feet first.

No matter the outcome, we’ve been promised a few more spots this year with Rogue Boxing Promotions.

Weigh-ins are today at 2:00 p.m.

Rodriguez, Trout and Han are Victorious in Torreon, Mexico

By Randy De La O

A big, big night for El Paso and New Mexico Boxing fans last night at the Auditorio Centanario in Torreon, Mexico. Heavyweight David "Nino" Rodriguez (31-0, 29 KO's) won a hard fought battle against Venezuela's Manuel Alberto Pucheta (23-4, 17 KO's), stopping him in the seventh round, to win the vacant NABA Heavyweight title, "Puchet came to fight and was in no way intimidated. It was a very entertaining fight" said trainer Louie Burke.

Las Cruce's own, Austin Trout (17-0, 13 KOs) did his part last night by knocking out Martin Avila (9-5, 3 KO's) of Juarez, in the fifth round, winning the WBA Continental America's Jr. Middleweight title. Abie Han (3-0, 3 KO's) took care of his guy, stopping Juan Carlos Ochoa (0-1) in the first round.

Congratulations to all the fighters and their trainer, Louie Burke.

In the maint event, Durango native, Cristian Mijares (36-5-2, 15 KO's) lost via a 12 round split decision to Panama's Nehomar Cermeño (17-0, 10 KOs). Cermeño won the WBA interim 118 pound title in their bantamweight matchup. The scores were 116-112, 115-113 for Cermeño, 117-111 for Mijares.
