I'm a little late in getting this out and I didn't want to let any more time go by without telling you about the 2012 California Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at the famed Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, California. It was a record attendance with the best of West Coast Boxing in attending, as well as some guests from the East Coast and more.
Tony “The Tiger” Lopez was on hand to receive his induction and his pal, Richard “Mr. KO” Savalas was on hand to share the moment with him. I had a chance to talk with both of them and it was an honor to spend time with them.
My friend Charley Norkus Jr. and his family came in from Long Island, New York to accept the honors for his late father, Charlie Norkus Sr., an exciting and tough top contender in the 40's and 50's. Rick Farris, Vice president of the California Boxing Hall of Fame brought it to the attention of the crowd that Charlie Jr. was one of the first responders on 9/11 when the Twin Towers were attacked and destroyed by terrorists. Many from his station died as a result of that attack. Charlie is an honest to goodness American hero and he received a well deserved standing ovation.
One of the highlights of the day was watching legendary female fighter, Lucia Rijker, receive her induction. A great fighter and a great person. She's still slugging away, training women fighters and doing her part to improve women's boxing.

Current middleweight champ Sergio Martinez was schedule to receive his induction but was unable to attend due to an injury and upcoming knee surgery. I was a little disappointed but that's just the way it goes sometimes!

Yes, that;s my name you see at the bottom of the inductees list and no, it's not a mistake, though I wouldn't blame you for thinking it was. In no way, shape or form do I think I belong in the same league as any of these inductees. In fact, I called the CBHOF President Don Fraser when I received the letter of induction just to make sure. I let him know in no uncertain terms that I just didn't belong with these guys. His response to me was, “Randy, some times the boxing community just wants to recognize one of their own”. I was overwhelmed by it all. I can accept this as an “A” for effort. I hope you will too.
With me on this day were my wife Jeri and our children; daughter Meranda and our granddaughters Mariah and Maddie, along with their father Robert Guardian, our son Andrew, who flew in from Seattle, Washington to spend the week with us, and our youngest daughter Savannah and her husband Josh Guerrero. My brother Dennis, his wife Teri and their daughter Samantha were also there. I appreciate all who came out to support me, including my cousins David Robles Sr & Jr., David Delgado and my friends Ed Hernandez Sr, & Jr. and all the rest who chose to spend the day with us.

I'm not much for speaking in front of a crowd but I did what I had to do. I dedicated the day for my family and I to my late grandson Nathan Joseph Guardian.
The best part of the day was seeing old friends and meeting new ones. You will never convince me that the boxing crowd isn't the best in all of sports!
It was an overwhelming day for me and an honor that I won't forget. My thanks to the California Boxing Hall of Fame, Rick Farris (Who worked his heart out for this one), Frank Baltazar Sr and Don Fraser and the 2012 Selection committee. Thank you for giving my family and I a day to remember!
Congratulations to all the inductees, including CBHOF Presidwnt, who was presented an "Outstanding Lifetime Achievement" award by Gwen Adair and Steve Harpst in the form of a prizefighter statue made by Steve. It was a well deserved honor.

The California Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Banquet took place this past Saturday at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio city and it was one of the best banquets in recent memory, at least it was for my wife Jeri and I. This year it was much more personal. Our cousin Louie Burke from Las Cruces, New Mexico was being inducted and the Burke clan was in town to support and celebrate with their fighter. Louie's brother former undefeated boxer and currently a top referee from New Mexico, Rocky Burke and his girlfriend Angela, Sister Shelly Burke, along with Louie's two children, daughter Samantha and son Vincente, and Louie's always elegant mother, Elba Burke, occupied the Louie Burke table.

Over at at our table, along with my wife and I, were our children, daughter Meranda, our son Andrew and his girlfriend Laurene Alvarado, our daughter Savannah and her boyfriend Josh Guerrero, my brother Dennis De La O and his wife Teri and daughter Samantha. All of us were there to cheer on Louie. Also sitting withe Burkes were boxing artist Roger and Maria Esty, Ed Hernandez Sr and his sons Ed Jr. and Patrick. Before the ceremonies began Roger Esty presented Louie Burke with a portrait. The portrait was completely unexpected and the entire Burke family was overwhelmed by Roger's generosity. All of us were.

The other Honorees include; Gene Fullmer, Dwight Hawkins (one of the greatest fighter to never win a title), John Liechty, Ray "Windmill" White, Tony Tubbs, Zack Padilla, Lance Pugmire, John Montes Jr, Herman "Kid" Montes, Ramon Tiscareno, Guillermo "Willie" Silva, Steve Brenner, John Montes Sr, Loreto Garza, Ray Lovato, Wes Wambold, Richard Savala, Rich Marotta. The posthumous inductees were; Willie Pep, Bob Fitzimmons, Robert "Bob" Voigt, Fritzie Zivic, Noe Cruz, Javier "Baby Face" Gutierrez, Jim Moriarty and Bert Colima.
In the case of Fritzie Zivic, his posthumous induction was made very personal to me. I was asked to receive his induction award. I was more than happy to do it, despite being nervous as hell. Turns out Fritzie Zivic and I share the same birth date: May 8th. Zivic was born May 8, 1913 and I was born May 8, 1954.
There were a lot of heartfelt speeches Saturday nigh but especially moving was the tribute to the late Javier "Baby Face" Gutierrez by his daughter Blanca Gutierrez. It was hard not to be moved by her tribute.

Still, with all that was going on Saturday, for our family, it was all about Louie Burke. Maybe it was because we had so much of our family there but the event seemed somewhat surreal to us, almost magical.

Kudos to Don Fraser and the California Boxing Hall of Fame selection committee for reaching out beyond the California borders and recognizing the best the sport of boxing has to offer. Thanks to Frank Baltazar Sr for his nomination of Louie Burke and to Rick Farris and the California Boxing Hall of Fame for entrusting me with Fritzie Zivic's induction, and last but not certainly not least, congratulations to the California Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2011 Inductees. You earned it.

Back in the day when Louie Burke of Las Cruces, New Mexico, was winding down his career, after fighting the likes of Charlie “White Lightning” Brown, Freddie Roach and Hector “Macho” Camacho, he could not have anticipated that the best was yet to come. How could he know that 2011 would be his year.
On February 5th of this year, trainer Louie Burke guided super welterweight Austin “No Doubt” Trout to victory over tough Rigoberto Alvarez of Mexico, to win the WBA World Super Welterweight Championship. And on Saturday, June 25, of this year, Louie will be inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame. A deserved honor.
His first trainer was his father Sam Burke, a former amateur boxer, a Marine and Korean War veteran that was wounded in action during the war. After returning from the war Sam became a trainer and was eventually a boxing coach for the U.S. Boxing team. Louie had a good man in his corner. After his father’s death in 1984 Louie was trained at different times by both Jesse Reid and Angelo Dundee..
After an amateur career that saw Louie winning the Silver Gloves State Championship, several Golden Gloves and AAU Championships and at one time being ranked as high as number three in the country, Louie turned to professional boxing. Louie had his first fight on May 29, 1981, knocking out Gilbert Garza in the 3rd round at the HemisFaie Arena in San Antonio, Texas. His last fight, on May 5, 1995 was against Rosendo Alonso at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, suffering a 5th round TKO. In between those two fights Louie never gave anything less than 100% of himself in every fight. In 1984 Louie fought a highly controversial fight with Charlie “White Lightning” Brown, a fight in which many fans still believe belonged to Louie. In 1983 Louie beat Freddie Roach in a 12 rounder, at the Showboat Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada to win the ESPN Lightweight Championship. They fought a rematch later on in the year, this time at Caesars Palace and again Louie got the nod in a 10 round decision win.
Louie, a father of two; a daughter and a son, and along with his brother, referee Rocky Burke, continue to give back to the community and the sport of boxing and they continue that journey that began years ago with their father, Sam Burke Sr.

Rick Farris: I'm proud to say I knew him when. There is nothing that makes me happier than to see someone get their just rewards for all their hard work. That's what happened this past weekend when my old friend Rick Farris was inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame-Class of 2010. As you can see from the photos, Rick is in good company. both Rodolfo Gonzales and Mando Muniz are Hall of Famers. As our old trainer, the late, great Mel Epstein would say "Rick is a deserving guy!" Congratulations Rick!
This past weekend, at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, California, some of the best boxers of the past were honored and recognized by the California Boxing Hall of Fame, and the boxing community came out to celebrate with them. The mood was festive as the boxers, their families and friends, as well as the fans, were on hand to witness their favorite fighter being immortalized in California’s Hall of Fame.
Some like Rick Farris and Tony Cerda Jr., were born and bred here in the Golden State, while others like Art Hafey came here from far away lands to stake their claim in California’s long and rich boxing history. They trained in places like the Main Street Gym or the Teamsters Gym and they fought in legendary venues such as, the Olympic Auditorium, the Hollywood Legion Stadium, the Forum, the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Wrigley’s Field, the great casinos of Las Vegas and in Madison Square Garden in New York. Others, like Oklahoma’s Sean O’Grady fought here briefly but made their mark by showing great courage in their ring battles, as was the case for seventeen year old O’Grady who came to Los Angeles in 1976 to face Danny “:Little Red” Lopez at the Forum. He lost that battle when the fight was stopped after the fourth round but showed the stuff fighters are made of by taking the fight to Lopez. He proved he had the right stuff when in 1981 he wrested the WBA Lightweight title from Hilmer Kenty. Sean’s award was accepted by his friend and attorney Tom Ray. Tom Ray was also O’Grady’s cornerman.
California’s own Golden Age was represented by Enrique Bolanos, who’s boxing record reads like a veritable who’s who of one of booing’s greatest era, fighting the likes of Manuel Ortiz, Ike Williams, Art Aragon, Joey Barnum, Maxie Docusen, Jimmy Carter, Chico Vejar and so many more. His induction award was graciously accepted by his wife Ruby.
Legendary trainer Johnny Forbes, who passed way in 1971, received his honor posthumously. Forbes had a great stable of fighters that included Carlos and Al Chavez, Gil Cadilli, Keeny Teran, Cali Martinez and Vince Delgado, to name a few.
Rick Farris received his 2010 induction as a fighter but he may someday receive another award for his dedication to preserving and writing about local boxing history. Rick was a fighter’s fighter and he still continues to fight, only now he’s fighting to ensure that boxers of the past are not forgotten. He fights for their legacy.
Canadian Art Hafey, who knows a thing or two about being forgotten, has had a great year, starting with Dan Hanley’s “The Featherweight Wars ”, last years premier of the ”Toy Tiger” and culminating with his induction into the Hall of Fame. It’s a well deserved honor.
Lupe Aquino, the epitome of a humble man sated simply “I’m a man of few words” gave his thanks and left the podium. John Beyrooty ,on the other hand left no stoned unturned in accepting his honors and may very well be back in the near future to accept a newly created award for the longest and most drawn acceptance speech in any award, boxing or otherwise. Referee Pat Russell, a class act, accepted his award with his usual aplomb and was enjoying himself and interacting with fans. Russell, who’s name is synonymous with integrity is a referee’s referee.
The families of Junior Robles, Paul Palomino (Brother of Carlos Palomino) and Bryon Lindsay were there to accept the posthumous awards. All three were tragically killed on March 14, 1980, when, as part of a team that was headed to Warsaw, Poland, their plane crashed near the airport killing all 77 aboard the plane. It was a somber and touching moment as they recalled their loved ones.
There are so many personal stories for each and every fighter. There can be no greater honor than being inducted into the Hall of Fame for doing something that you loved. Especially a sport that can demand so much from an athlete. Boxing is a sport like no other and in my eyes boxer’s stand the tallest, at any weight.
Along with the honorees that were on hand to receive their induction were local boxing legends; Mando Muniz, Carlos Palomino, Bobby Chacon, Danny Lopez, Frankie Baltazar Jr., Ruben Castillo, Vince Delgado, Rodolfo “El Gato” Gonzales, Gwen Adair, Tony Cerda Sr. and Frank Baltazar Sr. and so many more.
A special thanks to Don Fraser and Frank Baltazar Sr. for a job well done. The 2010 California Boxing Hall of Fame was a success.

Thanks to the generosity of my friends, Frank Baltazar Sr and Tom Ray, my wife Jeri and I were able to attend the 2009 California Boxing Hall of Fame. It was an honor to sit and dine with some of boxing's best. Our group consisted of two tables; the Frank Baltazar table; with Frank and Connie and their family, including Frankie Jr. The other table was the James J. Jeffries table which included Rick Farris, Ed Hernandez and his son Patrick, Vince Delgado, Mando Muniz, Bobby Chacon and his friend Rosie and Roger and Maria Esty. The event was held at Stevens Steakhouse in Commerce, California and began at 11:00am with a social and registration hour. A steak dinner was served around noon and the inductions began.
Anyone who thinks award ceremonies are a waste of time, or perhaps a place for big egos to be satisfied and catered to would have been sorely disappointed. Instead some of the humblest, nicest guys you would want to meet were given well deserved awards. There was a lot of emotion on display Saturday by men who were both proud and humbled to be receiving recognition for a lifetime of work and passion in the sport that they love.
An entry in to the Hall of Fame is more than just another award, it is validation, and justifies who you believe you are, it says to your family and friends and anyone that cared to listen that "I am who I said I was, and I did what I said I did". Several of the guys that were honored had their families there, some from out of state, many of them were driven to tears, or talked in whispers lest they start crying out loud, especially when their families stood up and cheered. Validation! When they left the dais they stood just a little taller, had a little more bounce in their steps. It did my heart good just to watch them as they went back to their seats to rejoin there families.That same pride was evident in the table next to ours as the daughters and nieces of Bob Fuente and Tony Fuentes cheered when their father and uncle were inducted posthumously. .
Seeing guys like Mando Muniz, Bobby Chacon, Danny "Little Red" Lopez, Alex Ramos and Vince Delgado, or younger guys like Roberto Garcia was the highlight of the event for me but the kicker was sitting down and spending time with my friends Frank Baltazar, Rick Farris, Roger Esty and Ed Hernandez and his son Patrick. For a fight fan this was the place to be last Saturday. It doesn't get any better.

Every once in while we can go to bed at night and think to ourselves, today was a great day. Saturday, June 21, 2008, was that kind of day for me, a great day. It was a chance to see old friends and make new ones. In my opinions boxers are among the best people in the world and certainly at the top of the list when it comes to athletes. It was great to see so many fighters, managers and others that have been involved in the sport, get recognition and rewarded for their contribution to the sport of boxing. It was good to hear Johnny Ortiz speak of the Main Street Gym, which as you might know, is near and dear to my heart. For those that don't know, Johnny was co-owner of the gym, along with Howie's daughter Carol, after Howie Steindler's death in 1977.
This year’s induction , at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, California, was a little more personal for me. The late Keeny Teran was being inducted and honored posthumously. Keeny is the uncle of my life long friend Mike Teran. My wife and I and friend Ed Hernandez Sr. were honored to be seated alongside the Teran Family and share in the moment. Keeny’s brother Manuel (Manny) Teran was accepting the award on behalf of the Teran family.
Keeny was known for his battles with tough Tommy Umeda and for being one half of one the greatest six round fight in boxing. Gil Cadilli was the other half. They fought to a draw at the old Hollywood Legion Stadium, that old time fight fans still recall with fondness and with awe.

It was an emotional time for Manuel Teran and the entire family as Manuel was accepting the award from “Cali“ Martinez, former fighter and friend of Keeny. Manny was overcome with the memory of his brother Keeny and was unable to say what he wanted. Let me say it for him here. Manny wants you to know that the entire Teran family is grateful to the California Boxing Hall of Fame for remembering Keeny. This induction validates Keeny’s career and life and justifies their belief that he was one of California’s great fighters, that he has a place in our memories as well as California’s rich boxing history. They thank you and want you to know that Keeny Teran would be honored.
I personally want to thank my friend, 2007 inductee Frank Baltazar Sr. and California Boxing Hall of Fame President Don Fraser for making it happen. You guys did a great thing.

I don’t know what the numbers were for attendance but it was announced that this was the biggest turn out in the Hall of Fame history, so boxing is alive and well in California. It was great to be in a room filled with boxers and the people that love them. Some of the fighters in attendance were Frankie Baltazar Jr., “Cali” Martinez, Carlos Palomino, Mando Ramos, Danny “Little Red” Lopez, Alberto “Superfly” Sandoval, Randy Shields, Joey Olmos, Ruben Castillo, Andy Nance, Paul Banke and just so many more. California has produced some fine fighters.
The program began at 11:00 am with an hour to socialize and catch up. A prime rib lunch with all the fixings was served at noon. After lunch the induction ceremonies began. It was great for this fight fan to see so many boxing greats honored.
Also, thanks to Frank Baltazar Sr. for introducing me to his son, Frankie Jr., whom along with his brother Tony “the Tiger” Baltazar, were two of my favorite fighters of the seventies and eighties. It was an honor.
