It was a much rougher time for Beltway amateurs on the third day of competition at the National Golden Gloves in Las Vegas, NV.
Yes, the Russell Brothers continued to advance in the tournament -- Gary Antonio won his second bout at 123 pounds with a win over Ja'Rico O'Quinn of the Detroit region while Gary Antuanne Russell defeated Alfonso Olvera of Nevada at 141 pounds.
Also, Jalen Jones moved on to the next round at 132 pounds with a win over Anthony Brown of Detroit while Justin Bell advanced in the 178 Pound class with a victory over Xavier Hayden of the Upper Midwest region.
Johnathan Howard of North Carolina who is part of the DC Region team moved into the next round at 108 pounds with a win over Sergio Rameriz of the Omaha region.
On the downside, there was a loss that some might consider an upset. Malik Jackson, ranked number one in the country at 114 pounds, lost his bout to Darren Cunningham of St. Louis.
Also falling out of the competition was another Malik -- Malik Hawkins -- who lost at 152 pounds to Reyes Marquez of the Colorado-New Mexico region.
At 201+ Pounds, Anthony Nembhard lost his contest to Elvis Garcia of Nevada.
Also, Darnell Price II of North Carolina lost his contest to Alvin Davie of Florida.
