A quick recap of the highlights from a VERY busy Saturday night. in Beltway Boxing.
Let's start in Las Vegas where Gary Antuanne Russell made history tonight by winning the National Golden Gloves 141-pound title with a victory over Jarod Ennis of Pennsylvania. Russell now joins his brothers Gary, Allan and Antonio as the fourth member of the family to win a national Golden Gloves title. No family has ever accomplished this.
This is the ninth national Golden Gloves title a Beltway Boxer has won in the last five years.
Antonio Russell's bid to become just the third boxer in Beltway history to win two national titles fell short as he lost to Ruben Villa of California at 123 pounds. Reports are that Antonio Russell injured his shoulder during the tournament.
The Washington, DC Region team took the second-place trophy at the event. First place went to the Colorado-New Mexico region led by Fort Washington, MD native Marquis Moore who won his second straight national title at 165 pounds. Moore is in the Army stationed at Fort Carson, CO.
Meanwhile, at the Ernst Center at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, VA, Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson successfully defended her WIBA Welterweight championship with a second-round TKO over former world champion Mia "The Knockout" St. John.
Nelson was truly the aggressor throughout the contest, landing her left hand repeatedly. Early in the second round, Nelson landed a crushing left hand that sent St. John on wobbly legs. The bout was stopped at the 42-second mark of the second round when referee Steve Smoger deemed St. John unfit to continue.
Nelson scores her first professional knockout and remains undefeated at 9-0-3, one KO. St. John falls to 47-14-2, 18 KO's.
We will recap the rest of the card later today here. However, Pro Am Fight Talk does have complete results.
Also, Dusty Hernandez Harrison scored a fourth-round TKO over Roberto Valenzuela in Chester, WVA. Harrison is now 22-0, 12 KO's. Harrison dropped Valenzuela in the third and fourth rounds before the bout was stopped.
We hope to have some results from the amateur shows at Club One in Millersville, MD and the Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic later today as well.
