Thursday was a much better day for local amateurs at the Junior Olympic Nationals in Charleston, WVA as three boxers advanced to the semifinals.
At 145 pounds, Joey Veazey of Pasadena, MD won a 2-1 decision over Miguel Contreras of Bakersfield, CA. Troy Isley of Alexandria, VA won his first bout at 154 pounds and scored a first-round TKO (yes, they use that language in the amateurs now) over Nicholas Silva of Lowell, MA. The stoppage came at 1:57.
Isley, a 2014 Junior Open champion, has moved up two divisions from junior welterweight to compete in this tournament.
Meanwhile, Kashif Muhammad-Brown of Upper Marlboro, MD advanced to the semis at 176 pounds with a 3-0 win over Jeremiah Nguyen of Belleville, IL.
